About the MTB Tour

MTB Tour day: November 21, 2020

Featuring an approximately 13-mile route, the non-competitive MTB Tour is a showcase of Maricopa Trail diversity. A few climbs, and descents, pushing it out on the flats, navigating rocks, sand, and roller coaster single track are all part of the fun of this challenging, but beginner friendly, course.

Close to 350 racers in 2019 came from around the Valley, Arizona and across the country to share in the experience of racing and supporting the trails. You see, the Prickly Pedal isn’t just a great event, it’s an opportunity to support development of a world-class 300-mile trail that rings Maricopa County and links many of its regional parks. Proceeds from the Prickly Pedal support the Maricopa Trail and Park Foundation (MT+PF), a nonprofit organization which strives to provide sustainable financial support to the newly constructed Maricopa Regional Trail System.

Besides being a challenging, exciting, race/MTB Tour/trail run, why does the Prickly Pedal exist? To pour every dollar of race revenue into efforts that will add more pristine miles of Maricopa Trail for riders to enjoy.

The MTB Tour features a couple short, steep, rocky climbs and descents…some of which may require you to dismount and hike. This is not a race but a ride – not timed, and non-competitive. Completion times for most riders are at 2-3 hours. Be prepared for a hard, fun day in the saddle. This is a mountain bike ride at its desert best.

The Prickly Pedal MTB Tour features a start at Game and Fish Headquarters, 5000 W Carefree Hwy Phoenix, AZ beginning at 11:00 am. There will be an aid station along the route stocked with water, sports drinks, fruits and HAMMER Nutrition Products.

Participants will enjoy a free snack on event day provided by Hickman’s Egg Ranch and free entry into the After Party and Award Ceremonies at Lake Pleasant Regional Park Ten Lane event from 12:00pm – 4:00pm. The After Party will include refreshments, a free raffle ticket, a beer garden, live music and a free kids race.

All riders, racers, their fans, friends and family are encouraged to join us at Lake Pleasant Regional Park for the After Party and Awards Presentation.

There will be a shuttle from the After Party back to the start at Game and Fish Headquarters for riders. Riders can check their bikes into a secure bike corral at the After Party while the shuttle takes them to retrieve their vehicles at the start line.

With an average 300 days of sunshine a year, Cave Creek and the greater Phoenix area offer near-perfect weather that will make your ride exhilarating. Average daily highs in January reach the high 60s, and nightly lows are in the high 40s. Since it is a desert climate, humidity and average rainfall are very low and it is recommended you drink extra amounts of water to stay hydrated. See current weather in Cave Creek.
